Facial Massage Benefits: How To Perform a Facial Massage

Have you ever noticed the gorgeous healthy glow your skin has after a facial? Of course you have! Yes, that’s partly due to the skincare products used, but an often overlooked benefit of a facial is the physical act of massage! In fact, the value of massage goes way beyond feeling refreshed and relaxed. Research has shown that regular facial massage can increase blood flow to the skin, improve the appearance of fine lines and aging, and even fade scarring.

Keep reading to find out more about the skin benefits of facial massage and how you can incorporate it into your daily routine.

What Is Facial Massage?

Facial massage has been used for centuries throughout the world as a way to improve muscle tone, encourage circulation and relieve pain and tension. Facial massage is a practice that involves rubbing and manipulating the skin and muscles of the face to aid lymphatic drainage and improve the complexion. Proponents of facial massage (us included!) believe with consistent practice and effective technique, massaging the face can improve muscle memory and tighten sagging skin.

What are the Benefits of Facial Massage?

There are several benefits of regularly massaging your face, including;

  • Improved skin tone
  • Increased collagen production
  • Improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Encourage lymphatic drainage
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Temporarily lift skin
  • Increased blood flow

In addition, studies have found that facial massage can help relieve stress and improve symptoms of Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). TMJ is a painful condition caused by inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. Regular facial massage has been shown to help ease TMJ symptoms by restoring normal muscle tone and reducing inflammation.

How To Perform a Facial Massage

There are many ways to benefit from facial massage, but we recommend incorporating the technique into your morning and evening skincare routine — this is because massage brings more blood cells to the skin, increases oxygen, and improves the absorption of products.

Follow these steps for a super simple and effective facial massage technique:

  • Cleanse your face thoroughly. We recommend using a gentle, lash-friendly cream cleanser like the Avari All-In-One Bamboo Charcoal Cleanser.
  • Once cleansed, apply your favorite nourishing moisturizer and begin at the chin and jawline, gently sweeping your fingers up in one fluid motion.
  • Continue up your face and bring your fingers over the cheekbones, sweeping upward and outward.
  • Tap your fingers gently underneath the eyes, moving outward towards your temples.
  • Finally, work from the center of the forehead, using the same upward sweeping motion from the eyebrows to the hairline.

Avari Tip: Don't forget to include your neck and décolletage! To lift the skin and improve circulation, apply light, quick strokes up the length of the neck toward the jawline.

If you have injectables or fillers, be sure to ask your injector before starting a new facial massage routine.
