The Science Part
Did you know that most people have anywhere from 90 to 150 individual lashes on the upper lash line alone! Eyelashes play a very important role in protecting our eyes from debris and dirt. Plus, because eyelashes are extremely sensitive to touch, when they're touched, an automatic signal is sent to your brain telling you to close your eyes! Pretty and functional!
The Lash Growth Cycle
Eyelashes have three distinct growth phases, and each hair can be in a different stage at any one time.
The active growth stage is called Anagen. This is when your eyelash is actively being nourished with a blood supply. The Anagen phase can last anywhere from 4 – 10 weeks, and your lash will grow up to 0.14 mm each day!
The transition phase is called the Catagen stage. During this phase, the hair follicle begins to shrink and detach from its blood supply, stopping its growth. During this stage, the lashes keep the length they've achieved during the Anagen phase while waiting for the final phase to begin. This typically lasts around 2 – 3 weeks.
The final phase, the resting and shedding stage, is called the Telogen phase. During this time, your lash sits dormant while a new lash begins to grow inside the follicle to replace it. The Telogen stage can last up to 4 months before the lash falls out. Once ready, the old lash will shed naturally — this accounts for some minor lash extension loss you might experience. Now we've covered how the lash growth cycle works, let's cover
The Basics of Lash Aftercare
Lash extensions are attached to your natural lashes with the lash extension lifeline — aka lash adhesive. If your lifeline fails, you'll lose your lash extensions prematurely and may find that you need to go back for infills much more regularly. So how do you ensure lash longevity? You can start by following your lash technician's advice explicitly — especially in the first couple of days as the lash adhesive is setting.
Here are Avari's top tips for lash extension aftercare:
It can take up to 24 hours for your lash glue to fully set, so for the first 24 hours, it's essential to:
- Avoid direct contact with water.
- Do not apply any products to the eye area.
- Try to sleep on your back.
- Don't touch your eye area!
From two to 14 days:
- Remember to remove your eye makeup each night (Avari's Foam Lash Cleanser can help with this!)
- Avoid any oil-based products; they can cause your lash adhesive to fail.
- Do not rub or play with your lashes.
- Avoid very hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, and steam facials.
- Cleanse your lashes twice a day with our Eyelash Foam Cleanser (remember to enter the giveaway for a chance to win a free lash cleanser!)
- Pat lashes dry after cleansing and brush twice a day with a disposable mascara wand.
- Visit your lash technician every 2-3 weeks for a refill to keep your lashes looking gorgeously full and fluttery.
Of course, like everything in life, eyelash extension aftercare and optimal retention will take a little practice and routine. If you're doing everything you can and still losing your lash extensions at an alarming rate, speak to your lash technician, they will be able to give you personalized advice on how to get the best out of your extensions!
